Escalade au Laos

[English version below]

Climbing in Laos

I have been living in Vientiane for 3 months, the capital of Laos PDR, and for 4 months more. I have stalked forums, social networks and all possible contacts to find where and how to climb in Laos, especially around the capital. Please find below a non-exhaustive compilation of all information I’ve found and areas where I’ve been for climbing.
I’ll try to keep this article updated, do not hesitate to contact me if you have more information.

Climbing in Vientiane

Currently (mars 2020) there are neither climbing gym nor bouldering wall or even opening project in Vientiane. However, I have found some workarounds to be able to feel your biceps swell.

  • There are 2 bouldering areas next to each other in the Phou Phanang National Park (30 km, 45 min from Vientiane)
    • The first is located near the “Wat Dane Soung” temple. Take the dirt rord through the temple and follow the trail that goes to the viewpoint. Boulders are around in the forest, with traces of chalk sometimes. You can reach the temple by motorbike or with a 4WD car. Otherwise you will have to stop 1km before and finish by foot.
    • The second area is located at the south of “Tat Xone Elephant Resort”. The dirt road to access to is in good condition. Then you will have to look for boulders in the forest. (Check french version above for a map)
    • Here are links to resources about theses areas (thank you again Bruno K.):
  • There is a gym center in Vientiane, “Lanxang Indoor Stadium” in front of Bazaar-B, that has a climbing wall outside (10m high approximately). I’ve tried to access to it but the manager told me that the wall is closed for an indefinite period ☹
  • Then, the last solution is to build your own training board. You will go around the city 4 times in order to find all materials but it definitely the best solution to train every day. I have even found guy with a wood lathe to make me half round holds!

Climbing in Thakhek

Thakhek is THE spot to climb in Laos, I’ve meet there people coming from US or Canada that stayed there 3 to 4 weeks in a row! There are hundreds of routes, well equipped and for all levels. Rocks shapes are amazing, the diversity and proximity of areas will help you to escape from the sun.
I highly recommend Green Climber House if you plan to stay there for many days. There are, basically, all information on their website.
Its really a small village of climbers, the atmosphere is less #wild that Vang Vieng for example and sometimes you can almost believe that you are in a climbing gym. Another pro : if you plan to come alone, it’s really easy to create relations and to find people to climb with.

Climbing in Vang Vieng

There many many small areas where climbing is possible around Vang Vieng (VV), you will find below a list of those I’ve visited. Be aware that climbing in VV is really different that in Thakhek : climbing spots are for from each other and you would probably need a motorbike to reach them (50K kip/day for renting). Route are much less climbed, les maintained and some access can be a little bit “jungle”.
In my opinion: Thakhek is definitely worthy for a climbing trip of many days or months but climbing in VV is more confidential. It’s ok to go there for 2-3 days (when you live in Vientiane for example) or to mix tourism+climbing. But I think that the area is too small and not practical to justify an intensive week of climbing (except if you have particular climbing projects) : some access can take time, route choice is limited …

  • Pha Deang
Interesting area if you climb in 6-7 grade and reachable by foot from VV city center. The site is a little bit in high and is oriented more or less to the south. Some routes are in the shade of trees but the heat is definitely there. It’s good to have piece of small-diameter-rope to change some lunule because some were very scary!
  • Pha Thang
This site is located north of VV, 20km of motorbike then 15 minutes walking. You have to expect the jungle at the bottom of the crag and sometime even in the route themselves (mosquitoes, ivy, dust …) The site is stretching in length and you have to walk between routes. There are rather « high level » routes but by climbing in 6-7 grade there is enough to occupy yourself.
